Vaastu Shastra - Principles governing a Site

In Sanskrit, the word ‘vaastu’ means ‘a dwelling’. Vaastu Shastra is an ancient Hindu Architectural practice that guides us how to do construction of houses, shops, factories and other commercial buildings in tune with the Laws of Nature for the well being of an individual as well as humanity as a whole. Vaastu Shastra deals with the various aspects of designing and building ‘living environment’ that is in harmony with physical and metaphysical forces. We may lead a peaceful, healthy, happy and prosperous life if these principles of Vaastu Shastra are applied properly and judiciously.

In this article, a few important principles governing a plot/site are enumerated as under:
·      While you plan to buy a plot, prefer North-facing direction as it is considered highly auspicious. East and west facing plots can also be considered, however, south facing land should be completely avoided.

·      Ideally, the shape of a residential site should be square or rectangular.

·      If the plot is not a perfect rectangle, at least the south-west and south-east sides should be at a 90 degree angle from each other.

·      A round, oval, L-shaped or triangular plot is inauspicious.

·      Plots having more than four sides – Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon shaped plots should be avoided for construction of house. People in such plots are believed to always live in fear.
·      One should avoid plots curved at the center and sloping on all sides. Same with the plots that are depressed at the center.

·      The north east side of the land should be the lowest side. The land should either slope down towards the North or East, but never towards the West or South..

·      An extension on the north-west side is believed to cause loss of wealth and peace.

·      A house should ideally be built in the south-west part of the site. The open spaces should be in the north and east.

·      An open space in the west is believed to have a negative effect on the residents.
  • Plots which are broad in front and narrow at the rear are called Shermukhi. They are auspicious only if North-East is extended and road is on East or North

·       Agricultural land must have slope towards the East or the North
directions. But it should not be towards the West or South direction.
The agricultural land shouldn't be multilevel.

Ø The Roads around the Plot also plays an important role as per Vaastu Shastra for the well being of its habitants.
  • The plot with roads running along on all four sides is the best. It brings health, happiness and prosperity.
  • It is inauspicious if there are three roads only on the East, South, and West
  • If there are roads on only the East and North side, that is good
  • Roads on the North, South, and West is not so good
  • If there are roads on the West and North, it is average
  • The plot with a road running along and ending at the North-East corner is very good. But if the road ends on any other part of the plot it is usually not good
