In Sanskrit, the word ‘vaastu’
means ‘a dwelling’. Vaastu Shastra is an ancient Hindu Architectural practice
that guides us how to do construction of houses, shops, factories and other
commercial buildings in tune with the Laws of Nature for the well being of an
individual as well as humanity as a whole. Vaastu Shastra deals with the
various aspects of designing and building ‘living environment’ that is in
harmony with physical and metaphysical forces. We may lead a peaceful, healthy,
happy and prosperous life if these principles of Vaastu Shastra are applied
properly and judiciously.
In this
article, a few important principles related to balconies are enumerated as
under:
· Balconies
and verandas should ideally be built in the northern, northern-eastern or
eastern sides of a house. They should not be built in the southern or western
sides.
- Balcony
towards north invites wealth and prosperity whereas the one towards east
blesses the residents with good health and new opportunities in life.
Having a projection in the northeast in the form of a balcony or a terrace
garden that is open to sky can be a guaranteed blessing for its residents
in terms of prosperity, happiness, mental peace and high education.
· If
a balcony is in the southern-western side of a house, it should be covered or
enclosed.
·
The
floor or roof over a balcony should be lower than the floor or roof of the main
building.
· It’s
ideal if a balcony’s roof is slanting towards north or east but never towards
south and west.
·
If
a swing in balcony is used, it should be placed in the East-West axis only.
·
Never
keep tall and heavy potted plants in the northeast direction as they would
totally block the early pious and beneficial solar energy from entering the
house. It is
ideal to keep only pots of small flowers or plants in the balcony.
- The flats
are also given merits according to the location of the balconies. If the
flats have balconies from north to northeast or from northeast to east
then it is considered to be the best flat and the ones that have balconies
in the west are of mediocre quality. The flats that have balconies towards
south and southwest are considered as inferior quality ones.
- Normally
people use balconies for utility purposes and place washing machines here.
With the machine comes the trap for draining the water. Be extra careful
that these traps are never placed in the southwest zone of your balconies.
These can result in draining the wealth of the family living in the house.
- Square
and rectangle shapes are preferred for balconies and verandas. They should
never be rounded off, and the walls should always meet at ninety
degrees.
- Balconies
should be constructed in the eastern or northern part of the house and
avoided towards south and west. But if a balcony is constructed in
the south direction then it is essential to have one in the north, and if
there is one constructed in the west then it is essential to have one in
the east.
- Balconies
towards north and east should be wider than the ones in the south and west,
if at all constructed. Please keep in mind that balconies projecting towards
South attract litigation and fire hazards.
